10 tips for more eco friendly transport by Annie Lee

  1. 1. This first tip is good for not only the planet, but the mind body and soul. Walk, jog or cycle to work! It saves money, stops pollution and is good exercise to prevent heart disease and obesity.
  2. 2. If you’re too far away from work to go by foot or bike, get a bus or train, as these are the most eco friendly ways of transport.
  3. 3. If you still have to drive to work for one reason or another, share lifts with colleagues, it’s not much extra effort and chatting with a friend is one of the best ways to start your day.
  4. 4. When you are in your car in a traffic jam or rush hour, switch off your engine. If it’s left on for more than 10 seconds, it’s using more petrol than you need to restart the engine.
  5. 5. When going on holiday, avoid going by plane as much as possible as this is the least eco friendly way of travelling.
  6. 6. If you do have to go by plane make sure you fly direct as taking off and landing takes a lot of fuel.
  7. 7. Instead of going on holiday abroad every year, try and just make it every other year, and the years you don’t, treat yourself to a spa weekend or a posh hotel for a few days.
  8. 8. When you’re just taking a trip into town, if you’re in a rush or it’s too far to walk, try the park and ride. It’s convenient for you as the buses run very frequently and saves the extra pollution.
  9. 9. When it’s time to get a new car, choose a hybrid, as they are much more energy efficient than normal cars.
  10. 10. Also, when you’re going on a road trip, make sure you have nothing on the roof, in the boot and the tyres are properly inflated as all of these factors reduce fuel use. Don’t accelerate and brake strongly, as it can add up to 30% to your fuel bill.
