Eco-friendly Surfing Family By Elena Isolini
Dorian ‘Doc’ Paskowitz originally trained as a physician, graduating from university in the 1950s. However, he left his successful practice and escaped the surrounding society in the pursuit of his two passions; surfing and health.
Dorian led a nomadic surfing lifestyle and raised nine children with his wife on the beautiful beaches of America. The children would surf every day and were not raised with the traditional standard education. Instead, they were taught that there was a difference between ‘information’ and ‘knowledge’ and that the lifestyle he had created for him and his family, would build a greater understanding of the world than any education ever could.
Raw foods and organic produces
The family would only eat raw foods and organic produces, Dorian banned consumer foods from his children, including sugar and foods that contained lots of fat. The children were effectively raised on a strict natural diet of seven grain cereal. This natural and eco-friendly way of eating led to a low carbon foot print as well as an impeccable diet. The lifestyle was non-toxic and ‘free’, as the family of eleven lived and travelled all across America to various beaches in search of ‘the perfect wave’ on their 24 foot campervan, keeping carbon emissions to a minimum. The children were all brought up and lived on the campervan, without heating and limited electricity - this would be more eco friendly than the average house for 11 people.
Negative effects
The film ‘Surfwise’ was recently released, as a documentary of Dorian’s life, exploring his legacy and the effects produced from the controversial ‘First Surfing Family’. The documentary however, also shows the negative effects of enforcing strong eco-friendly ideas and ethics. It would seem Dorian’s morals and ideas, on what would be closest to a perfect lifestyle, ultimately pushed some of his children away from him.
Legend?
Dorian’s life is full of admiration from his followers. He is still surfing today at the age of 88, and currently lives in Hawaii with his wife. The beliefs that he followed with such dedication over the years are still surrounding, consisting of love, family and healthy food. The lifestyle was extreme environmentalism, even if he did not intend it to be so, and his legacy continues to this day inspiring young families to break away from society and find refuge in the waves.
