Homemade Batteries-By Iszi Taylor

The chemicals in usual batteries can be quite damaging to the environment when disposed of due to lithium and mercury in them. However, there are other safer and fascinating ways of producing handmade batteries…using food from your own kitchen...

By simply putting a nail in one side and penny in the other of a lemon, these will act as electrodes and the acidic lemon will generate an electric current which can be used to power something such as a clock or radio. The advantage to this is that  both are environmentally friendly and renewable, as lemons can be grown.

To make a vinegar battery you will only requite few materials, simply pour vinegar into a pot or container (a film canister is best) then through the lid, push either two needles or nails through, the acid in the vinegar will yet again generate current, by attaching wires or crocodile clips you can connect it to an electrical device to power it.

Potato juice does not have acid to generate a current; however in this vegetable it does have the chemicals that can be stimulates to create a current. By yet again having two electrodes using nails, needles or coins, energy will be made to power a device such as a light or clock.

This new innovative idea, only recently invented is a breakthrough in science, by glucose (usually a few drops of a fruit juice such as grape) can produce even enough electricity to power an iPod. However ,this is in early progress and is much more difficult to construct compared to the other batteries.
